How we got £5,000+ of Free Advertising for our Client
How about a 3 page ad in your local paper for nothing? Sound too good to be true?
We recently achieved exactly that for a fashion shoot. We had the full cover of the Weekend magazine and two full internal pages all with images from the clients fashion shoot.
Three full pages !! I’m guessing that’s got to be worth somewhere between £5,000 and £10,000 of advertising.
And the client spent nothing on adverts at all !
A three page spread for nothing!
Let’s start from the beginning, newspapers and magazines are hungry beasts which need feeding with page after page of material. And these days especially they are being fed by an ever decreasing number of journalists. So if you can offer the editor something free they can use – without treading on the ad departments toes – then you’re in.
The fashion story is a good one for getting lots of pictures, because fashion is very image led. But the trick is in finding a way of expressing the story in the right way.
You can’t write an advert, that will sink without trace (or more likely be passed to the sales department).
You have to write a generic, interesting piece – that just happens to feature your products.
How about the future of the bathroom – new style baths, fittings and modern stylings? The home and gardens section will love that – the fact that all the photos are your products doesn’t matter to them. If you put it together properly, you’ll get the company mentioned and a link to the website.
And it is not just local newspapers in the same boat, every magazine out there has the same trouble – so if there are trade magazines you need to be in, or even nationals, then the same process works.
You know it works because you’ve seen and read these puff pieces from other companies so many times yourself.
So why not help yourself to some free advertising?

Very interested in this. We have a rather unusual childs toy that will be launched shortly – do you think this scheme would work?
No reason at all, as long as you dress it up as something other than a dull product launch.
Maybe go down to your local playschool and run a “test” with the children, then you get a story something like “Local school children help test new product from Cheltenham company” – which ticks several boxes for the newspaper.
yes charles I agree with you…”the client spent nothing on adverts at all ” good idea
